Wine Museum (Archaeology - History - Art) - Wine Making - Classical Orchestra - Music

Details about Expertise / Competences / Technologies
The Cyprus Wien Museum is located at Erimi village, the birthplace of European wine, with a winemaking history of
over 5500 years, according to the archaeological findings and excavations of Porphyrios Dikaios in Erimi in 1933.
It features an important thematic exhibition, which is divided into four sections (Ancient-Medieval-Byzantine-
Contemporary). It presents a unique collection of archaeological findings and exhibits which have been granted by the
Cyprus Museum, the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation - Pierides Museum, the private collection of the founder and
other institutions and individuals.
It provides visitors with a unique experience and informs them about the production, storage, use and trade of wine
since antiquity. It also outlines the importance of the vine, grape and wine in the arts.
Throughout the year lectures, wine tasting sessions, performances and concerts are organized. Also, different
educational programs aimed at school groups of all levels are applied.
It displays the indigenous to Cyprus grape varieties, as well as the history of one of the oldest and unique wines that
are still produced in the world, Commandaria.

Commandaria Orchestra
The Cyprus Wine Museum is one of the few museums in the world that has its permanent orchestra. Commandaria
Orchestra was founded in 2009 by Dr Francis Guy, who is the musical and artistic director of the ensemble.
The orchestra aims to spread theme musical projects directly or indirectly related to the culture of Cyprus from
antiquity to the present day.
The name of the orchestra is derived not only from the universally unique and most ancient sweet wine of Cyprus, to
which references are made by Hesiod and Homer but also from the location of the Wine Museum, which is found at the
historic administrative center of the Great Commandaria (Kolossi Castle). Finally, the word orchestra has its roots in
the word orchos which in the Homeric years meant row of vines from which the members of the ‘orchistes’ (a group
of dancers/musicians) got their name who offered their worship in the vines to God Dionysus.
