Adult education based on an innovative system integrating ICT and radio

Radio ECCA Foundation was founded in 1965 in the Canary Islands (Spain), with the mission to bring education to
adult people in remote and rural areas. Over the years, Radio ECCA has transformed into an established
educational and learning centre, becoming a national benchmark in the field of adult education. The foundation
has based its headquarter in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, but it operates, with additional offices, across the
whole Spanish territory. Moreover, through institutional partnerships, it is also present in Latin America and West
Africa.

Radio ECCA has developed its own distance teaching system - the ECCA System, which embeds the use of ICT and
its own radio to conduct its educational work. It has developed >400 distance training programmes for adults
(VET). The staff is composed by 600 professionals who design, produce and give to students the varied training
offer at the regional, national, and international level.

Radio ECCA focuses its work on the promotion of adult education, entrepreneurship, social inclusion,
environmental protection, health literacy, ICT, and innovation. Through its action, the foundation can reach
different target groups: families at risk of exclusion, women, young people, adult students, unemployed people,
entrepreneurs, migrants & refugees, people from rural areas.

International cooperation actions, among others:
 Radio ECCA works in Senegal, Guinea Bissau, and Mauritania, to improve population’s literacy and provide training on
health, community wellbeing and entrepreneurship. In Senegal alone, Radio ECCA has managed to involve over 6,000
women in its courses in the past 8 years.

National educational actions, among others:
 Training and support of female migrants (4,800 stakeholders reached by the project);
 Support for health prevention and gender violence (85 women victims of violence trained);
 Awareness-raising campaigns on education, environmental protection and social innovation towards children (1,185
children and 140 parents engaged only in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria);
 Training courses for women and young unemployed people conducted in 7 Spanish regions
