Through their research, the scholars working at the Institute are analyzing contemporary identity issues,
processes of cultural exchange, cultural transfer, border thinking, creative developments and the rise of modernity
in the Baltic area. The research activities include the examination of national literature in the contexts of the
historical Baltic space (European and East-European) as well as of comparative literature, the studies of
Latvian folklore, and the analyses of historical and current trends in the development of Latvian theatre,
cinema, and music.

The Institute has been involved in research projects supported by the government of Latvia, Latvian Science
Foundation, European Structural Funds, European Economic Area, and European Regional Development Fund.
