Dr. Elena Marushiakova has a number of publications about Roma/Gypsies in Bulgaria, Balkans and Central
and Eastern Europe. Her major publications (in co- authorship with Veselin Popov) include the first
monographic research on history, social structure and culture of the Gypsies in Bulgaria (1997), book on
Gypsies in Ottoman Empire (2000) and book on Gypsies on the Black sea (2008). They are publishing also
Series in field of Romani Studies “Studii Romani”.

After 1989 she co-founded the Minority Studies Society Studii Romani. Elena Marushiakova is president of
the Gypsy Lore Society, which is more than 100 years old international scholar organization, in field of
Romani studies. She is member also of number of other professional organizations: European Association
Social Anthropologists (EASA); Professors Beyond Borders; International Council of Museums/International
Committee for Museums Ethnography; International Council for Traditional Music. She is also member of
Scientific Committee of the European Academic Network on Romani Studies, established by European
Commission and Council of Europe.

Elena Marushiakova is member of editorial board of Romani Studies peer reviewed journal.

Elena Marushiakova is holder of Fulbright New Century Scholars Award 2009 from the Bureau of
Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.

Elena Marushiakova is chair of the Department of Balkan Ethnology at the Institute of Ethnology and
Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. There together with
Dr. Veselin Popov they created specialised Romani/Gypsy Studies Library with Archive
